Starlink India Price Glitch Explained: Launch Awaiting Final Government Approval

Starlink has corrected a configuration fault that briefly showed service prices for India, while government approvals and a separate Maharashtra partnership move ahead, raising interest about when satellite-based internet through Starlink India will actually start commercial operations in the country.

Lauren Dreyer, Vice President and Senior Director-Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX, addressed the issue on X, stressing that "those numbers do not reflect what the cost of Starlink service will be in India", and confirming that Starlink India is still awaiting the formal launch of services.

Starlink India Pricing Confusion and Website Configuration Glitch

Earlier on the same day, visitors to the Starlink India website briefly saw service details that appeared operational. The page showed a monthly subscription of Rs 8,600 and a separate Starlink hardware kit priced at Rs 34,000, creating the impression that orders were open for customers across India.

Dreyer later clarified that "The Starlink India website is not live, service pricing for customers in India has not yet been announced, and we are not taking orders from customers in India". Dreyer added that "There was a config glitch that briefly made dummy test data visible, but those numbers do not reflect what the cost of Starlink service will be in India. The glitch was quickly fixed," indicating that Starlink India information published earlier was only test content.

Starlink India Approvals, Expansion Plans and Hiring Activity

Dreyer said Starlink is keen to offer high-speed connectivity in India and noted that "our teams are focused on obtaining final government approvals to turn service (and the website) on". Recent recruitment moves also suggest Starlink India operations are being readied for launch as clearances progress.

At the end of October, SpaceX posted four Bengaluru-based roles linked to Starlink India: Payments Manager, Accounting Manager, Senior Treasury Analyst and Tax Manager. The company described these roles as part of a wider international expansion, signalling plans to build local finance and compliance capacity before commercial satellite-based internet services begin.

Starlink India Service Features and Technical Focus

For the global roll-out, Starlink highlights a plug-and-play user terminal, more than 99.9 per cent uptime, and resistance to extreme weather. Starlink India offerings are expected to mirror this model, with no data caps aimed at households and institutions in regions where terrestrial broadband often remains patchy or unavailable.

Earlier, the Maharashtra government signed a Letter of Intent with Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited to work together on bringing satellite-based internet to remote and underserved areas. The collaboration covers government facilities, rural communities and key public infrastructure, especially in aspirational districts such as Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Dharashiv and Washim, aligning with wider Starlink India ambitions.

Maharashtra Leads India in Satellite Connectivity Partnership

The LoI between Maharashtra and Starlink India was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and state Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar. The plan is to use satellite links to support connectivity for public services and villages where fibre or mobile networks remain weak or inconsistent.

With the pricing glitch resolved, Starlink India now awaits final regulatory approvals before any official tariff announcement or customer onboarding. The Maharashtra partnership, recent hiring in Bengaluru and Starlink's stated focus on rural access together indicate how satellite-based broadband could be positioned once Starlink India services begin.
