How to Add Multiple Captions to Your Instagram Carousel Posts in Seconds

Instagram just fixed one of the most annoying limitations of carousel posts. Until now, you could only write one caption for the entire post, no matter how many photos or videos were in it. With the new Multiple Captions feature, that's changing.

How to Add Multiple Captions to Your Instagram Carousel Posts

What the Feature Does

The update lets you attach a separate caption to each individual slide in a carousel, instead of one generic caption sitting below the whole post. As people swipe through your carousel, the caption changes along with the image or video, giving each slide its own context.

This is especially useful for things like travel recaps, step-by-step tutorials, product showcases, or any post where you're walking someone through multiple images that each need their own explanation.

How to Use It

Setting it up is simple. Start a new carousel post, add your photos or videos as usual, then tap the caption area. You'll see an option to choose between Single Caption and Multiple Captions. Switch it to Multiple Captions, and a separate text field will show up for each slide. You can fill in a caption for every image, or leave some blank if you don't need text on all of them.

Since carousels currently support up to 20 photos or videos, that also means you can have up to 20 unique captions in a single post.

Rollout Timeline

Instagram confirmed the feature went live yesterday. Since it's a gradual rollout reaching over a billion users, it might not show up on your account immediately. Instagram says it should be available to everyone within about a week.

Why This Matters

Carousels have quietly become one of Instagram's best performing post formats, often outperforming Reels in engagement. Multiple captions adds more reasons for people to swipe through slowly and stay on a post longer, which generally helps with reach. It's also a genuine accessibility win, since people using screen readers will now get a proper caption for each slide instead of one caption trying to cover everything at once.

This isn't the only profile update Instagram has shipped recently. Earlier this month, the platform also rolled out Grid Reorder, letting users rearrange how posts appear on their profile grid without affecting the original post dates.
