Nothing has officially unveiled the Phone (3a) Community Edition, a limited-run smartphone shaped through a months-long co-creation effort with its community.

Instead of keeping the creative process behind closed doors, the company invited fans to contribute ideas across hardware, software, accessories, and storytelling.

More than 700 submissions came in, and four creators were eventually selected to help bring the project to life.

How the Community Helped Shape the Device

The hardware design for this edition comes from Emre Kayganacl, whose approach draws inspiration from late-90s and early-2000s tech. The result is a look that feels playful and nostalgic without drifting away from Nothing’s visual identity.

The accessory design, created by Ambrogio Tacconi and Louis Aymonod, introduced a dice-inspired concept. It’s a simple object with a lot of cultural weight, and they reinterpreted it through Nothing’s clean design language.

On the software side, Jad Zock designed a custom lock screen clock that focuses on lowering visual clutter, making it easier to glance at the time without that momentary “what did I just read?” pause. Jad also created the exclusive wallpapers that tie the phone’s colour and texture together.

The marketing concept comes from Sushruta Sarkar, whose “Made Together” campaign leans into the idea that the process itself is as important as the final device.

A Broader Push Into Community-Led Product Thinking

Nothing has been experimenting with more ways to involve its community, including an elected board observer and a new investment round for supporters at its Series C valuation. The company is trying to explore what long-term product development could look like when its user base has a say in shaping it.
