Apple Reportedly Plans to Split iPhone 18 Launch into Two Phases: Major Shift Coming in 2026–27
Apple is reportedly preparing one of its biggest strategic shifts in years by splitting the launch of its upcoming iPhone 18 series into two phases. Instead of unveiling the entire lineup at its traditional autumn keynote, the company plans to stagger releases across 2026 and 2027.
According to Bloomberg, Apple will unveil the second-generation iPhone Air in March 2027, followed by a high-end 20th-anniversary iPhone in September 2027. This marks one of the most notable shifts in Apple's product planning in over ten years.

New iPhone Launch Strategy
This shift aims to ease the growing pressure on Apple's annual event, streamline internal operations, and maintain consumer excitement throughout the year. If implemented, the move could significantly redefine how Apple approaches future iPhone launches.
Apple is preparing to divide the launch of its upcoming iPhone 18 series into two phases, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Under this revised timeline, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive in autumn 2026, while the standard models will reportedly debut in spring 2027. The move is designed to reduce the pressure of Apple's traditionally packed autumn event and make yearly announcements more manageable.
Next year, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, and the long-rumoured iPhone Fold may also make its first appearance. The company is also likely to introduce new Apple Watch models and updated Macs. By staggering these releases, Apple gains more operational flexibility and can better fine-tune production timelines.
Foldable iPhone Project
Apple is said to be using the iPhone Air as a testing platform for components and design principles related to its foldable iPhone project. The foldable model is believed to share several structural elements with the iPhone Air. Earlier reports suggest the iPhone Air may ship with a single rear camera, as Apple reportedly considers an ultrawide lens less essential for the device's target audience.
Apple's 2027 Plans
In spring 2027, Apple is expected to introduce the base iPhone 18 alongside a possible successor to the iPhone 16e, potentially named iPhone 18e. A refreshed version of the iPhone Air might also make an appearance during this period.
The highlight of Apple's September event will be a special anniversary iPhone model celebrating 20 years since the original iPhone's launch in 2007.
Why Apple Is Splitting the Launch
This dual-phase release strategy helps Apple better manage production demands and market dynamics. By spreading out product announcements, Apple avoids overloading its supply chain and keeps consumer interest strong throughout the year.
The approach highlights Apple's evolving product strategy and its focus on long-term operational efficiency. If successful, this model could influence how other tech giants plan major product launches in the future.
